6.5 - Steins;Gate (2011)
4.5 - Is the Order a Rabbit? (2014)
5 - Re Zero (2016)
Steins;Gate (2011) attempts cyber-punk and time-travel deconstruction, focusing on its aesthetic presentation and smooth pacing. The time travel narrative runs into inconsistencies, yet once again is revived through aesthetic presentation. Adversely the tone and style changes between its slice-of-life and dramatic conflict arcs. The show concludes with corny character drama, conventional humor, and a so-so finale.
Is the Order a Rabbit? (2014) incorporates moe slice of life cliches in a unique cafe setting.
The psychological pathos of Re Zero (2016) is a shallow yet effective aesthetic, with a shallow yet effective isekai (born in another world) backstory. Many ideas are developed and recycled, such as Subaru’s relationship with many throwaway characters never to be seen again. Certain scenes’ intense delivery often paint imaginative pictures (such as Rem swinging the morning star). The inconsistencies continue with rushed action arcs near the end. The execution is mostly what saves the work.
